For a few months I have been following Serenity Urban Wellness on Facebook. Saturday morning, I was finally available to attend the 8:15 AM yoga session. I have been an anonymous admirer of the urban dwelling business because they provide accessibility to the benefits of yoga in an urban setting, at no or minimum cost. When I walked in the building, I was embraced with warm smiles, the smell of incense, and an energy that makes you feel safe and welcome. I was also drawn in by the exquisite and unique art garnishing the walls. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of butterflies---yes this was a place intended for transformation. I later learned that the paintings were by a local artist, Loria Grant-Eubanks, from A Different Stroke of Art Studio.
The session led by Dena began with introductions, as she expressed that she incorporates her own unique style and approach to yoga. I have been practicing yoga intermittently for at least 20 years. Instructors bring their own distinctive flair and flavor to yoga; it’s definitely not a one size fits all practice.
After the introductions, each of the four participants drew an affirmation card. Mine was titled “Freedom and Direction”. It stated, “Everything you have experienced in life has shaped the person you are today. There is no shame. --- I release myself from the expectation of others. My journey is my own.” For years I tried and failed to live up to the expectations of others. I realized this a few years ago, and ever since have strived to be my authentic self, not by chance but by divine intention. I was reminded of this yet again.
The gentle, restorative yoga practice incorporated soothing music in the background, along with breath work to slow-down, bring awareness to the here and now, and to help obtain a state of balance and peace. Dena encouraged each participant to continue to practice self-love throughout the day, week, and beyond. So many of us do not know how to love ourselves and to actively practice SELF LOVE. How can we truly love ourselves, yet think the worst of ourselves? Self-love includes acceptance, forgiveness, valuing, and understanding of oneself. So let us all be encouraged and practice self-love.
Dena provided a safe space – it allowed for openness, transparency, and expressions of feelings and emotions without judgment or shame. Serenity Urban Wellness lives up to its name, the feeling of peace and vulnerability resonated within me into the following day. The 1-hour session is offered at no cost, but a $10 donation is recommended.
